The Wind Energy Industry is Nothing New

John Houghton from Cambridge said in his paper Global Warming: The complete Briefing, ‘Given that it has been used as a form of energy for a couple of centuries, wind is a very common source of energy. The fact that there were about 10,000 windmills to tap wind energy in the Year 1800 itself, goes to show that wind was an important source of energy in parts of Europe like Britain. Therefore it is not surprising that parts of the world like some countries from Western Europe such as Great Britain and Denmark and some countries in western North America are trying to revive ways of tapping energy from wind. Gucci outlet Slim, tall and more efficient objects have replaced windmills to tap wind energy.’

Even other researchers from Cambridge have worked on this subject. Vaclav Smil in his paper Energies wrote, ‘The windmills in 19th century, which were at par with watermills of that period with regard to generating power, were of a different design. They were used in farms and on Railway stations. Before that, post mills of 1.5 and 6 Kilowatt and Gucci outlet online tower mills of 5 to 10 kilowatts were used in Europe for this purpose.’

Studies tend to indicate that though the use of windmill to generate energy started in China, it soon spread to parts of Europe like England in the 12th century and by the end of the century there were 12000 mills in the region that needed little water to produce electricity to meet huge industrial demands.

Other researcher and historians like Cynthia Shea in her paper Renewable Energy: Today’s Contribution Tomorrow’s Promise points out that other European economies like the Danish industry at a particular time used wind-power to satisfy Gucci sunglasses 1/4th of their power needs.

In United States of America, policy makers while stating it to former President George W Bush said, ‘Since around the year 1900, windmills were used to pump water in farms and ranches in the country. They even led to the production of electricity and turbines. Before that grain was ground and water was pumped with the help of wind mills as early as year 200 B C.’

Dennis Hayes in his paper The Official Earth Day Guide to Planet Repair also verifies the same as he says, ‘Before Carbon-fired power plants, 8 million Midwestern windmills made electricity by driving water and crushed grains. There was no other way to do Gucci shoes so before villages got electricity in 1920s and 1930s.’

Christopher Flavin in his worldwide paper Electricity for a Developing World: New Directions has also urged the underdeveloped countries to follow American example of how they used Midwestern windmills to generate electricity for their rural sector.

Windmills have been used for centuries for pumping water in rural areas. They also grind grains and do other small tasks. Though traditional windmills can also generate power, latest technology and wind power together can be the foundation of Gucci men boots mechanical power and can generate electricity in underdeveloped countries

The history of windmills has been penned down extensively by Wilson Clark in his work Energy For Survival: The Alternative to Extinction. With regard to Europe, he says, ‘Developed in Seventh century in Persia, windmill reached Europe through Dutch and England in thirteenth century enabling them to generate 1 billion kilowatt- hour of electricity. The wind energy produced by windmills was used as a source of power to the sailing ships. The Persians Gucci bags again became the first to use wind to develop mechanical power and used windmills to put out water for irrigation. Whereas windmills were used in Persia in seventh century, it reached France in 12th and Denmark, Germany and the Netherland in early 13th century.’

What The New Facebook Profiles & Staging Homes Have in Common

So tonight as I watched the new Facebook Profile being unmasked during 60 minutes, I realized I was both excited and nervous to take a peek for myself. I headed on over to check it out and quickly recognized the prompt guiding me through the update. If you haven’t seen that prompt, you can get the ball rolling here.

Once upgraded I experienced the happy delight of a new vantage point…exactly the same high I get when rearranging Gucci outlet furniture. Yes, I enjoy the familiar comfort of my living spaces, but it’s always refreshing and energizing to update the design and functionality in my home. Same goes for Facebook Profiles…really! So here’s what I like so far…and what might take some getting used to:

What I like:

* The photo stream at the top highlighting photos you were tagged in. There is clearly more of an emphasis on Gucci outlet online photos. Images are eye-catching and this new design provides more staying power for recent posts w/ photos….more opportunity for engagement.
* Main navigation is now located in the left sidebar vs. top tabs (which no longer exist). Profile navigation actually seems more intuitive to me, and mimics more of the design and feel of the home page.
* Your photos and videos are now merged. Access your photos link from the left side navigation and view all photos and videos you have shared or have been tagged in. You can view photos and videos separately or as a mashed feed down the page. Perhaps this new design will motivate those of you waiting to get started with video…to just do it already! ;)
* One of my most favorite new features of this new profile is how “friends” are now displayed and organized. You can easily filter friends from your profile as opposed to just in the newsfeed. But instead of filtering lists Gucci sunglasses or groups of people you set, you filter via location, school, work, etc. This will definitely make engagement more fun and efficient from your own profile. Profile filtering will most likely become a new task on my Daily Engagement Plan.
* I like poking from my profile. Pokes are a better fit on the profile. This nonchalant form of engagement is kinda fun, it can be both an active and passive form of engagement to let others know you’re thinking of them….with a little nudge.

Might take some getting used to:

* I’m not a big fan of the new headline in replace of my own creative bio or description that formerly resided Gucci shoes under my photo. This new headline pulls info from your profile information which can be customized to include your work, education, relationship, birthday, location, etc. Is this Facebook’s attempt to keep things “simple and easy”, showcase your “background” and put more emphasis on interactions over cleverly crafted identity statements?! You tell me?! But I really think I should have the option to create my own headline, bio, or statement.
* My Facebook Business Page gets the boot! Well, at least as a direct link from Gucci bags my sidebar. If you want your Facebook Page linkable from your main profile (i.e. the headline up top) then you have to add it to your work history. Which is still lacking a bit in functionality since some of us may have different company and community focused pages. Clearly this is still a work in progress for FB. Just be sure your Pages are listed in your contact info and work info for maximum visibility.
* Updating your Info links. These are the links associated with your work history, likes and interests, education, etc. Currently many of these links take you to Community Pages which usually just aggregate keyword content and posts Gucci men boots referencing the topic (good for search & monitoring). However, if you want your friends to be able to click these links and land on your actual Business Page, then you will have to reset them. This feature wasn’t working for me right away last night. I tried entering Agent Evolution and Reggie tried RPR several times but apparently we were experiencing a glitch. So just be sure to enter the text for a particular page EXACTLY as it reads on and shouldn’t have any issue.

Helping Teachers Save Time with New Classroom Technology

At the core of student success are teachers. However, teachers today are being asked to do more with less, and are continually looking for ways to more effectively help students learn.

As the GM of Microsoft’s Education group I spend time in schools and universities, and with teachers and faculty. I work to better understand their needs, and how companies such as Microsoft can deploy technology that helps Gucci outlet them meet their key challenges. For instance, I recently was in Denver, meeting with people in the Denver Public School system. I heard teachers and administration alike say, “Make it easier. Ensure that your products work with what we have in place today, and help engage our students digitally.”

We’re working to do just that. One example is the new Microsoft Office Add-in for Moodle. Many universities and K-12 schools use Moodle to create course websites for students and others. A Moodle course typically includes things such as Gucci outlet online course calendars, lesson plans, assignments, and other class resources.

Like Moodle, Microsoft Office is prevalent in classrooms around the world. In fact, more than 90 percent of teachers and students worldwide use Office. So we explored ways to improve how educators can intuitively and efficiently use the two products together. What we developed is simple. The Microsoft Office Add-in for Moodle provides educators an easy way to find, open, and save their Microsoft Office files housed in Moodle. It’s free and available for download at Gucci sunglasses www.educationlabs.com. You also can see a short video of how easy the new Add-in makes this.

This tool was created by Microsoft’s Education Labs team. That team was established in July 2009 to quickly create prototypes of new tools, applications, and services that showcase how Microsoft technologies can meet the needs of schools, teachers and students. Sometimes we create or use brand new technologies. Other times we integrate our technologies with others’, including industry standards or even competitive technologies. For example our Education Labs team recently released applications to help teach chemistry, make digital flashcards to help students learn concepts, and also introduced the Microsoft Live Services Plug-in for Moodle. You can find these and other resources for teachers at Gucci shoes Microsoft Education Labs.

Steve Coppin, the E-learning Technical Developer at the University of Kent in England, says that the Office Add-in for Moodle is “easy to use, and anything that makes life easier for our teachers is great. We are constantly on the lookout for ways to streamline the process of updating teaching materials and the add-in certainly Gucci bags accomplishes this. Allowing teachers to interact with Moodle directly from the Office suite removes part of the process that could deter providers from keeping their content relevant and up to date.”

I look forward to updating you on coming news on how we are furthering our commitment to education by providing free Gucci men boots and simple tools to help schools, teachers and students do their jobs better and more efficiently. For a complete list of tools to help educators, please check out http://www.microsoft.com/education/teachers/default.aspx. You also can see a short video of how easy the new Add-in makes this.

AOL Acquires Technology Blog Network TechCrunch

AOL has made a major move in its bid to reinvent itself as a new media juggernaut, acquiring popular technology news publication TechCrunch and its associated properties.

Rumors of the deal emerged on Monday evening, with both GigaOm and The Wall Street Journal reporting that Gucci outlet that the two companies were in negotiations.

The acquisition was formally announced in rather dramatic fashion earlier this afternoon at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco, where AOL CEO Tim Armstrong and TechCrunch Founder and Gucci bags Co-editor Michael Arrington took the stage to announce and sign the agreement, as well as answer a few questions from members of the audience (Armstrong actually published the news to TechCrunch from the stage too).

Armstrong and Arrington did not disclose terms, though CNBC’s Julia Boorstin reports that the price is Gucci outlet online “about $40 million.”

At AOL, TechCrunch becomes the centerpiece of a technology news publishing outfit that already includes Engadget, Switched, TUAW and Download Squad. In a statement Armstrong said, “TechCrunch and its team will be an outstanding addition to the high-quality content on the AOL Technology Network, which is now a must-buy for advertisers seeking to associate their brands with leading technology content and its audience.”

Asked on-stage about what the deal might mean editorially given the scope of the publications Gucci sunglasses (TechCrunch also runs CrunchGear, MobileCrunch, and TechCrunchIT, among other sites) now under the AOL roof, Armstrong said, “We talked to Mike and [TechCrunch CEO] Heather and we agreed that there’s an opportunity to have a much larger tech presence as a whole. I would expect these brands to operate independently but leverage each other when needed and build a much more significant content audience for tech.”

Arrington, who founded the site in 2005 and still breaks many of its biggest stories, will remain Gucci shoes a part of TechCrunch for at least three years as part of the deal, thanks in part to what he described on-stage as “incentives.”

The TechCrunch deal builds on an already busy day for AOL on the acquisition front; earlier this morning, Gucci men boots the company announced that it had acquired 5min, a video syndication platform.

Taking Pictures of Magazine Articles in a Bookstore: A Conundrum

An article in last Sunday’s New York Times asked whether people who use their camera phones in bookstores to make copies of copyrighted material — in author Nick Bilton’s case, pages from books on home interior designs Gucci outlet — are “pirates.”

To get an answer, Bilton turned to three academic experts. The two lawyers (the third was an economist) were Julie Ahrens, the director of the Fair Use Project at Stanford Law School, and Charles Nesson, the Harvard Law professor who tried to argue that his pro bono client Joel Tenenbaum was engaging in Fair Use when downloading music files from a P2P sharing network (Tenenbaum lost). Nesson’s views on Fair Use have been considered far-out even by the likes of Lawrence Lessig.

Fair and balanced? Draw your own conclusions, but here’s how the two legal academics cleverly finessed their well-known positions on matters like this: They allowed that the question of whether or not Bilton acted legally falls under the Fair Use factors that a court must consider under US copyright law. But they conveniently omitted the salient fact Gucci outlet online that of the four Fair Use tests, the one considered most important is this: does the use of the content negatively affect the market for the work? Bilton admits in his article that he and his wife sat on the floor of their local Barnes & Noble, took pictures of selected home designs with their iPhones, and left the bookstore without buying anything.

If that’s not an effect on the market for the work (albeit a very small one), I don’ t know what is.

The point here is not to try to finger Nick Bilton for copyright infringement due to his actions, which by themselves are rather inconsequential. Instead, the point is to explore the more interesting effects of his article. Bilton can be said to have published a recipe that others can use to perform actions that publishers may construe as copyright Gucci sunglasses infringement, and to have done so in a very prominent publication.

Publishers and content licensors have been concerned with this for years. They already use technologies — not mentioned in Bilton’s article — to find copies of content online, such as image tracking from PicScout and text fingerprinting from Attributor. Of course, those technologies couldn’t be used in a personal device such as an Gucci shoes iPhone if the resulting images are only used personally, unless hardware makers were compelled to build them into their devices.

But some may liken Bilton’s article to the code for cracking DVD encryption that a few people posted on public web pages — a legal matter that reached a United States Appeals Court. Publishers may grumble. But would they have a case against the New York Times?

I’m not a lawyer, so I invite others to comment with their opinions. Yet here are some factors that may be relevant Gucci men boots:

* The analogy to DVD cases like Corley and Remeirdes fails because the latter people publicized ways of circumventing DRM, which is illegal under the DMCA (17 USC 1201). There is no DRM on printed books and magazines.
* What Bilton did is also doable with a pencil and paper, albeit with more time and effort (not to mention conspicuousness to store personnel).
* Neither Bilton nor the Times makes the tools; they’re just telling people about them, and the tools in question — digital cameras — have far more noninfringing than infringing uses.
* There is this little thing called the First Amendment.

On the other hand:

* It could be argued that the Times sought to gain from publishing this “infringement recipe,” since Gucci bags their editors choose articles to publish based on what will sell copies of the paper (or bring traffic to their website). That would introduce factors related to the “inducing infringement” theory behind the Supreme Court’s Grokster decision of 2005, which caused Grokster’s non-liability to be revisited.
* This behavior could be lumped under the heading of photocopying — as if the bookstore had a photocopier on the premises. For example, the Copyright Clearance Center charges corporations license fees for presumed photocopying of periodical articles and other content.

New technology could help IVF success rate

Thirteen failed IVF cycles is just too many. Yet many women continue treatment hoping to achieve a viable pregnancy. Using new technology known as Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (Array CGH) researchers at Care Fertility in Nottingham, enabled a 41-year-old woman to conceive after 13 failed cycles of Gucci outlet IVF treatment. She is due to give birth in two months time.

IVF success rates have gradually increased since this procedure was first introduced in 1978. Improved success was due to both procedural advances as well improved patient screening that allowed Gucci bags identification of those patients with the greatest chance to achieve a pregnancy.

However, improved pregnancy rates are only half the story along with increased success has come a Gucci outlet online dramatic increases in the risk of multiple pregnancy. Clinicians are faced with the dilemma of patients demanding the highest pregnancy rates hand in without concern for the risk of high order multiple births. In many countries, guidelines restrict the number of embryos transferred. As a result, pregnancy rates may be reduced. CGH may offer an option that solves this dilemma.

IVF success defined as deliveries per started cycle are reported at 25-45% with most of the variation due to the patient age and selection process. When embryos are evaluated by removing a single cell and testing a few chromosome pairs to see if the embryo has the normal two copies for each chromosome around 85% of the embryos come up abnormal in this very Gucci sunglasses limited evaluation. That explains why when the embryologist simply looks at the embryo to determine which embryo might be best to transfer, they are often wrong. Even the perfect appearing Day 5 blastocyst may contain genetic errors.

Recent studies have demonstrated that preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) may not result in an overall improvement in the delivery rate. So, researchers have been looking for screening methods that offer Gucci shoes greater ability to determine the implantation potential for a single embryo. Early data suggests that CGH may be what we have been looking for. By removing 8-10 cells from a blastocyst embryo on the fifth day after retrieval and testing those cells per embryo implantation rates of up to 66% have been reported.

As CGH takes about a week or two to get results, the embryos must be cryopreserved and transferred in a subsequent Gucci men boots treatment cycle. And, there is not yet a clear answer whether removing the cells and freezing the embryos will ultimately adversely affect the embryo. We await the opportunity to review more data to learn whether CGH alone or in combination with other techniques may at some time in the future allow us to transfer a single embryo with a high level of confidence that a pregnancy will result.

New technology to deal with China’s most serious occupational health disease

On July 22, 2009, lung CAD (Computer Aided Detection) technology for pneumoconiosis screening, a jointly funded project by GE Global Research (GRC) and the Science Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality (STCSM), was successfully reviewed and Gucci outlet validated by an expert group of the STCSM.

The joint team, from the Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and GRC Shanghai, Bangalore Gucci joy bags and Niskayuna, developed this technology to detect China’s most deadly occupational health disease, pneumoconiosis.

Cases of pneumoconiosis have grown exponentially over the last several years. By the end of 2008, the number of reported cases reached 638,000 – half of the total number of reported cases in the world. One of Gucci outlet online the biggest obstacles to controlling and stemming this disease is limited access to screening.

Today, pneumoconiosis screening is very costly and time consuming. To make a diagnosis, doctors must review chest x-ray film and compare with standard films of pneumoconiosis. 500 chest radiographs for health check normally cost one day Gucci sunglasses to 3 qualified doctors. The new CAD tool developed by GE and Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital will automate this analysis; substantially streamlining the time it takes for doctors to make an accurate diagnosis and providing access to screening for millions of more workers.

The CAD system is a combination of technologies based on digital radiography, such as image processing, feature extraction, statistic analysis and machine learning, etc. The detection tool will analyze the chest x-ray image, and Gucci shoes automatically select and classify them according to the difference between patients and healthy people. It can also be applied to dynamic diagnosis and evaluation of disease development by comparing x-ray images of identical patient at different time.

The development of the new CAD tool is also part of GE’s Healthymagination initiative, which is focused on Gucci handbags developing new technologies, products and services that improve the quality, affordability and access to healthcare around the world.

Finally, new technology prizes from NASA

If you think you can create a nano-satellite, a solar-powered vehicle that runs at night, or a robot that can retrieve geologic samples with no direction from you or any other human, NASA wants to hear from you.
For the first time in five years, the space agency has announced new Centennial Challenges — NASA’s way of Gucci outlet soliciting technology projects from anybody who works outside the aerospace industry. Students are also eligible.
Together, the three challenges have a purse of $5 million.

From NASA:

The Nano-Satellite Launch Challenge is to place a small satellite into Earth orbit, twice in one week, with a prize of $2 million. The goals of this challenge are to stimulate innovations in low-cost launch technology and Gucci outlet online encourage creation of commercial nano-satellite delivery services.

The Night Rover Challenge is to demonstrate a solar-powered exploration vehicle that can operate in darkness using its own stored energy. The prize purse is $1.5 million. The objective is to stimulate innovations in energy storage technologies of value in extreme space environments, such as the surface of the moon, or for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems on Earth.
The Sample Return Robot Challenge is to demonstrate a robot that can locate and retrieve geologic samples from Gucci sunglasses wide and varied terrain without human control. This challenge has a prize purse of $1.5 million. The objectives are to encourage innovations in automatic navigation and robotic manipulator technologies.

Details of the contests won’t be announced until NASA can find non-profit agencies to organize and raise money to run them, however. Those candidates can apply here.
NASA is caught in a swirl of controversy this week. A report issued Tuesday by the National Research Council says NASA needs a better way to control spending on its space missions since the last several ran late and over budget.

Today, meanwhile, the Senate Commerce Committee will be marking up the bill to reauthorize NASA’s Gucci shoes budget for three more years. Among the items in dispute are whether to extend the life of the space station, and how quickly and by what route NASA will send humans to Mars.
While all these details are being worked out, though, you can still follow three other Centennial Challenges that are already in progress.
- On August 13 in Seattle is the next round of the Strong Tether Challenge, in which teams will try to demonstrate Gucci handbags a material that’s at least 50 percent stronger than the strongest one you can buy.
- In the fall is the Power Beaming Challenge, where teams will use laser beams to transmit power to a device so the device can climb up a vertical cable that’s more than half a mile high.
- Next July in Santa Rosa, California, is the Green Flight Challenge, in which teams will fly aircraft that Gucci joy bags they’ve designed to fly 200 miles in under two hours on less than a gallon of gas for each person flying.

Will the iPad and Similar Technology Revolutionize Learning?

I am writing this blog post on the new Apple iPad while on a plane returning from the Newschools Venture Fund Community of Practice and Summit in Washington DC. There, at the nation's capital, a gathering of Gucci outlet education entrepreneurs from across the country explored the themes of technology and innovation.

We learned about strategies, about people, and about organizations that are trying to leverage the use of digital technology to improve learning outcomes for youth -- particularly those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. We learned about the approach of the School of One in New York that uses computer-based programs to customize learning for each student. We discussed the approach of hybrid schools where part of the learning is online. We learned about the High Tech High video chat system that they use to conduct teacher-sharing protocols with teachers in their network and around Gucci outlet online the world. We also used text message polls (like on an American Idol) created by Edmodo to stimulate discussion.

Milton Chen, Senior Fellow at the GLEF, encouraged us to think about developing new technologies that can assess deeper learning -- core content skills and knowledge with complex cognitive skills like critical thinking and problem solving. The meeting theme was very timely and provocative.

As I write this using an iPad, I find it interesting that we did not discuss the implications of the iPad and other tablet type devices on learning and school. I think this technology will revolutionize the way a student will Gucci sunglasses access all types of information: media, academic research, and books (non-fiction, fiction, and textbooks). In addition, students can produce digital work, blog, chat, and email with peers and teachers -- all for a relatively low cost.

The iPad still has room for improvement but the technology will evolve and the cost will drop (currently, it's around $500). Look for many new applications to be built for the iPad that will serve as a course of study or a unit of instruction. Someday, teachers might just create apps for their students instead of handing out papers, or posting Gucci shoes assignments on the Internet. I also wonder if this technology will allow access for students across the world that do not have access to schools or teachers.

At Envision Schools, we will be watching, experimenting, and learning how best to use -- or not use -- new digital Gucci handbags technology to transform the lives of students.

What do you think? Are these and other new technology a possible silver bullet for learning? Are you using any of Gucci joy bags these or other new technologies to improve outcomes for students?

New technology to speed cleanup of nuclear contaminated sites

A patent has been granted on this new type of radiation spectrometer, and the first production of devices will begin soon. The advance has also led to creation of a Corvallis-based spinoff company, Avicenna Instruments, based on the OSU research. The market for these instruments may ultimately be global, and thousands of them could be Gucci outlet online built, researchers say.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on cleanup of some major sites contaminated by radioactivity, primarily from the historic production of nuclear weapons during and after World War II. These include Gucci outlet the Hanford site in Washington, Savannah River site in South Carolina, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

“Unlike other detectors, this spectrometer is more efficient, and able to measure and quantify both gamma and beta radiation at the same time,” said David Hamby, an OSU professor of health physics. “Before this two different Gucci sunglasses types of detectors and other chemical tests were needed in a time-consuming process.”

“This system will be able to provide accurate results in 15 minutes that previously might have taken half a day,” Hamby said. “That saves steps, time and money.”

The spectrometer, developed over 10 years by Hamby and Abi Farsoni, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering, can quickly tell the type and amount of radionuclides that are present in something like a soil sample Gucci shoes — contaminants such as cesium 137 or strontium 90 – that were produced from reactor operations. And it can distinguish between gamma rays and beta particles, which is necessary to determine the level of contamination.

“Cleaning up radioactive contamination is something we can do, but the process is costly, and often the question when working in the field is how clean is clean enough,” Hamby said. “At some point the remaining level of Gucci handbags radioactivity is not a concern. So we need the ability to do frequent and accurate testing to protect the environment while also controlling costs.”

This system should allow that, Hamby said, and may eventually be used in monitoring processes in Gucci joy bags the nuclear energy industry, or possibly medical applications in the use of radioactive tracers.

Las Vegas Roller Derby

Anyone who knows me knows I’m constantly complaining about the lack of culture in Las Vegas. Every “community event” that I’ve gone to has been so sadly thrown together that I never go again. Even the long standing community event First Friday has lost all of its luster for me. I’d rather stay home and watch a movie than Gucci men boots maneuver my way through all the hipsters to get to the two artists that I like.

A few months ago, a savior in the form of an awesome community event appeared Gucci outlet: The Fabulous Sin City Roller Derby. Now this is the point where I should tell you what year it first started, how far they’ve come, et cetera… but I’m not going to do that. As far as I’m concerned they didn’t exist before I found them. They materialized out of a fog, because if they hadn’t, it would kill the magic.

I will explain a bit of how Roller Derby works, however. Basically there is a pack of girls. Yes, they are seriously called “The Pack.” They take off on an elongated circular track, and when they’ve gone about twenty feet, the two “jammers” from each team take off after them. They are all you need to worry about and they have stars on Gucci outlet online their helmets so they are really easy to spot. The first one to get through the pack is the lead jammer and she starts earning points every time she beats her way through the pack.

I am not a sports person. At all. I’ve given nearly every sport a fair shake and I’ve just found them too long and boring. I even watched a show today about football and it seems they only had two stories to talk about. Both of the stories were completely stupid. However, there is something about Roller Derby that makes it exactly up Asics Shoes my alley. It’s not too long, there are scantily clad women, and there are no “football minutes” to be had anywhere. Each team gets a few time outs but they fly by. It’s the perfect sport.

There are three home teams: The Hoover Damned, The Notorious VIPS, and The Tommy Gun Terrors. Each girl has her own “Derby” name, and they are all awesome — they match both their personality and the theme of the team. I also love that the numbers on the back of their derby shirts mean absolutely nothing. For example, Josie Savage from Gucci sunglasses the VIP’s number is “7ATE9”. I usually spend most of my time after a “bout” thinking about what my derby name would be if I were in good enough shape to join up.

I would have never found out about the derby if it weren’t for Lisa Carr ($0 Down) of the VIPS. We actually made friends through Twitter, where she runs the FJ Toyota dealership (Does her derby name make sense now? I love it!). She also happens to be president of the derby this season, so make sure and buy tickets and Gucci shoes attend the next bout on January 8th at 8:00PM. Use the discount code “lisacarr” and get $10.00 pre-sale tickets! Become a fan on Facebook to know when tickets go on sale.

Life Guides: How to Feel More Stylish

Sometimes fashion has nothing to do with what you wear. It’s not the latest Louis Vuitton handbag or a new pair of True Religion jeans. It’s not about traditional fashion. It’s about genuine style, real intelligence, unparalleled grace and so much more. But at the end of the day, style should make you feel Gucci shoes better and ultimately help you to live a more fulfilling life.

Take it from Coco Chanel who said, “Fashion is not something that Gucci men boots exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.”

I am here to deem a few things “stylish.” And they don’t have anything to do with Gucci outlet clothes, my friends. They have everything to do with fashion as Coco described it. Don’t be dictated my trends or jump on product bandwagons. Make sure you are enjoying fashion, and in turn, that you are enjoying life. Here are a few ways to do that; a few ways to feel more stylish without changing the clothes in your closet.

Smile. I happen to believe that a smile is the best accessory. It goes with any outfit and will never go out of style. You’ll never have to worry about if your pearly whites match your new boots or have to ask your friends if you can pull off a grin. So try it on. My guess is you don’t do it nearly Gucci outlet online enough. (I know that’s true in my case.) Flash someone a smile and you might just change their day. More likely, though, you’ll change yours.

Read. Knowledge is power. And it’s also attractive and very stylish, in my humble opinion. So go old-fashioned and read an amazing book. Think back to the fashionable days of the Jazz Age in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby or follow Sylvia Plath to NYC in The Bell Jar. Literature will make you think and feel in ways you can’t get from any other medium.

Re-fuel. Pamper yourself! Make yourself a bubble bath. Put on soothing music. Try out Asics Shoes lavender-scented candles. Sip tea. Then sit back, relax and enjoy. You work hard during the week, so take an hour or two to be by yourself and re-energize. With a little “me” time to build back up your resilience for the coming week, you will work every outfit with a little more pizazz. People will wonder what your secret is!

Explore. Go to the store with a mission: to find your signature scent. Perfume Gucci sunglasses is a luxury that will make you feel a touch brighter every day. Find a scent you simply adore, whether it has hints of vanilla, a soft floral fragrance or even something a little fruity. It’ll just smell like you, and you’ll feel more and more like yourself every time you wear it. It’s like instant comfort in a 6-ounce bottle. Love that!

Why is it important to set goals

Have you ever noticed that there is no correlation between being wealthy and having a high IQ or a university degree? If there were, every doctor and university graduate would be wealthy, and as statistics show, most of them end up in the same situation as 95% of the population.

The main thing that the majority of independently wealthy people have in common is that they have set goals for themselves and achieved them. They invest time in reading and learning about wealth creation Gucci outlet and are happy to learn from other people’s mistakes and experiences, as well as their own. They set goals, and realise that they will be far better able to achieve them if they familiarize themselves with the ways in which other people acted and the things that others have done to succeed. Wealthy people create wealth by carefully utilizing the income that they have available to them to their best advantage. They know that working harder and Gucci outlet online longer hours is not the way to achieve financial freedom, instead they have to utilize what they have, and make it grow.

This is a specific goal, and you could add a lot more to it. Because your goal is specific your mind immediately begins to ask questions such as “How much money will I need for the fees and charges? How much does that relate to if I break it down on a weekly basis? Will I have to look at my current expenses to see where I need to cut back so as to make up the difference for the amount I need to save?” Specific goals help you to create specific, realistic action plans Asics Shoes and as the old saying goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.

You will find that if you write down your goals on a piece of paper, and put it in a prominent position, so that you will read it often, your subconscious as well as your conscious mind will start asking questions Gucci sunglasses and coming up with answers, and you will find that you have already begun to take the necessary steps to achieving your goal.
It is helpful to have a series of goals, ranging from daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, ten yearly and thirty to forty yearly. You can always refine and change your goals as time goes on and situations change.

You may find that it is easier to start at the 40-year mark, and then work backwards. Try to work out what steps would be needed to achieve your 40-year goal, and spread them out over the different time spans, to what you would need to achieve to end up with the final result.

Try to make your goals realistic and achievable. Do not set a goal that is too hard. Set lots of small, Gucci shoes easily achievable goals and work step by step to achieve your road to success. Stay positive. Believe in yourself and your abilities to succeed, even if other people patronize you or try to put you off, or tell you there is no point.

Setting and achieving goals help you to create a stronger character. It is always helpful to remember that our brain cannot entertain both positive and negative thoughts at the same time. If you stay positive you will dispel negative thought patterns. Even if you come across little obstacles that get in the way of your goals, don’t give up. Focus on finding a solution, rather than focussing on the problem – utilize a positive response. Focusing on Gucci men boots finding solutions enables you to put your brain to work, to find ways around things. If you just see an obstacle as a problem and just accept that life has dealt you a blow, and let it stop you in your tracks, then you will never learn and grow. Remember that children learn to walk by falling over. Focus on the long-term achievements that you want to fulfill, and it will be easier to overcome your problems.

Microsoft Surface

Microsoft's corporate campus is a sprawling affair, with more than 100 buildings scattered over 261 acres. To make sense of it all, you have to navigate by numbers. The Microsoft Visitor Center, for instance, is in Building 127, north campus, while the Microsoft Conference Center is in Building 33, just down the road from the company soccer and baseball fields. About 4 miles away, however, there is an unnumbered building that is decidedly "off campus." In that building, Microsoft has quietly been developing the first completely new computing platform since the PC — a project that Gucci outlet was given the internal code name Milan. This past March, when the project was still operating on the down low, I became the first reporter invited inside these offices. My hosts politely threatened legal consequences if I blabbed about the project to anyone not directly involved in it, then escorted me down a dark hallway to a locked corner conference room. Inside that room was Microsoft's best-kept technology secret in years ... a coffee table.

The product behind the Milan project is called the Microsoft Surface, and the company's unofficial Surface showman is Jeff Gattis. He's a clean-cut fellow who is obviously the veteran of a thousand marketing seminars. He spoke in sentences peppered with "application scenarios," "operational efficiencies" and "consumer pain points" while he took me through a few demonstrations of Gucci outlet online what the Surface can do. One of Gattis's consumer pain points is the frustrating mess of cables, drivers and protocols that people must use to link their peripheral devices to their personal computers. Surface has no cables or external USB ports for plugging in peripherals. For that matter, it has no keyboard, no mouse, no trackball — no obvious point of interaction except its screen.

Gattis took out a digital camera and placed it on the Surface. Instantly, digital pictures spilled out onto the tabletop. As Gattis touched and dragged each picture, it followed his fingers around the screen. Using two fingers, he pulled the corners of a photo and stretched it to a new size. Then, Gattis put a cellphone on the surface and dragged several photos to it — just like that, the pictures uploaded to the phone. It was like a magic trick. He was dragging Asics Shoes and dropping virtual content to physical objects. I'm not often surprised by new technology, but I can honestly say I'd never seen anything like it.

The Anti-PC
The name Surface comes from "surface computing," and Microsoft envisions the coffee-table machine as the first of many such devices. Surface computing uses a blend of wireless protocols, special machine-readable tags Gucci sunglasses and shape recognition to seamlessly merge the real and the virtual world — an idea the Milan team refers to as "blended reality." The table can be built with a variety of wireless transceivers, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and (eventually) radio frequency identification (RFID) and is designed to sync instantly with any device that touches its surface.

One of the key components of surface computing is a "multitouch" screen. It is an idea that has been floating around the research community since the 1980s and is swiftly becoming a hip new product interface — Apple's new iPhone has multitouch scrolling and picture manipulation. Multitouch devices accept input from multiple fingers and multiple users simultaneously, allowing for complex gestures, including grabbing, stretching, swiveling and sliding virtual Gucci shoes objects across the table. And the Surface has the added advantage of a horizontal screen, so several people can gather around and use it together. Its interface is the exact opposite of the personal computer: cooperative, hands-on, and designed for public spaces.

If it seems as though the Surface machine sprang up out of nowhere, that's only because Microsoft has been unusually secretive about it. Early designs of the table were displayed around the room as evidence of the product's long development cycle; rejected shapes included "squashed white egg" and "podium." Steven Bathiche, research manager for the project, has been involved since the beginning (in 2001) when he and fellow researcher Andy Wilson first dreamed up the idea of a tabletop computer. Bathiche spoke about the Milan project's evolution with Gucci men boots the evident excitement of a man who's had to keep the most important thing he's ever done a secret for six years. "We've gone through several generations of this machine," he said. "The first was a proof-of-concept called T1, and we just hacked it into an IKEA table."

And there it was, partially disassembled, behind me. It looked as if they had attacked the prefab particleboard furniture from the Swedish superstore with a Sawzall, then stuffed in off-the-shelf computer parts, cameras, projectors and mirrors until it all worked. The idea went straight to the top: Once Bill Gates okayed it, surface computing moved from a heady research project to the nuts-and-bolts planning of product development.

Ford’s home EV charging station stacks up against competitors

Home charging stations aren't included in the purchase price of the growing numbers of electric vehicles from major automakers, so unless you live next door to a public charging station or are one of the 4,400 Volt owners to snap up a free one from GM, you’ll be forced to shell out some extra cash if you want a faster charging option than is possible with the included 120-volt cable. At least Ford’s home charging station for its new Focus Electric Gucci outlet is shaping-up to be little cheaper and more flexible than some competitor offerings.

Instead of being hard-wired into the electrical breaker box, the home charging station for the Ford Focus Electric, which was jointly developed with Leviton, plugs into a 240-volt outlet. This means removing and replacing the charger, when moving for example, is as simple as unplugging and plugging it back in. The station is manufactured in Gucci outlet online the U.S. and its exterior housing is made up of up to 60 percent post consumer recycled material. It will recharge the 2012 Ford Focus EV’s 23 kWh battery pack in around 3.5 hours and Ford says it will also be compatible will all the company’s upcoming electric vehicles.

With a standard installation, Ford’s home charging station Gucci men boots is expected to retail for approximately US$1,499, which doesn’t stack up too badly with its competitors.

The Chevy Volt’s 240-volt (level 2) Voltec home charging station will recharge the vehicle in around Asics Shoes four hours and will set you back US$490, plus an estimated $1,475 for (permanent) installation.

Meanwhile the Nissan LEAF’s 240-volt home charging station, built Gucci sunglasses and installed by AeroVironment, takes around seven hours to recharge the LEAF’s 24 kWh battery pack and costs around US$2,200 including (again, permanent) installation.

There is also a 500-volt level 3 quick charging option available in Japan for the LEAF that will charge the vehicle’s 24 kWh battery pack to 80 percent of full charge in less than 30 minutes. Although this will require Gucci shoes an expensive three-phase connection on top of the JPY1,470,000 (approx. US$17,730) purchase price for the charger.

Backup Strategy

When was the last time that you backed up your data? Today? Yesterday? Last week? A month ago? EVER?! And where did you save your backup? To another drive? To CDs? To an external drive? To the cloud via an online backup service? The reason I’m asking these questions is because most people don’t make backups, Gucci outlet and if they do, they “sort of” do them. I must admit, I’m not very good at it. I periodically, perhaps once a week, make a clone of my computer’s hard drive. But then I leave it sitting next to the computer. My wife is pretty good about archiving our family photos and other media via an external hard drive as well. And recently, we discussed Gucci men boots putting that data onto a small, portable hard drive and taking it to another location, well away from our house.

If you don’t have a good, solid, regular backup strategy, you should start thinking about Gucci outlet online one now. Hard drives fail all of the time and if all of your recent family photos are on a failed drive, it’s either impossible or extremely expensive to recover that data. If you are making backups regularly to an external hard drive, you have taken a good protective step, but if you leave that hard drive next to your computer and something disastrous happens to your home or office, your computer AND your hard drive could be destroyed by fire and/or water. A really good strategy is the following:

* Make regular backups

* Back up to multiple media types (e.g., DVD, internal/external hard drives)

* Take at least one of those backup types off-site

* Use an online backup service (ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? Leave a comment – I’m looking for a good one that Asics Shoes won’t break my wallet!)

That last bullet is an important one. While online backup services are great, they can be expensive, especially if you are covering multiple computers within your business or household. But with that expense comes a better sense of security knowing that your precious files are being backed up behind the scenes regularly – but remember, Gucci sunglasses those services require an internet connection to work properly.

So, what can you do as a “middle ground” type of solution? Something that is cost-effective, yet solid and secure? One solution is to get a hard drive from ioSafe. Just their tag line gives you a bit more confidence: “Disaster proof hardware.” The kind folks at ioSafe recently sent me the SoloPRO External Hard Drive which has a USB 3.0 connection (which does support USB 2.0 as well). Let me tell you this, when I got the box, I was really surprised at Gucci shoes how big AND heavy it was. For a second, I thought that they had sent me a few hard drives of theirs to play with. But no, after unpacking, I saw why it was so large and weighty. This hard drive is built to last!

Are You Too Optimistic?

Are you too optimistic? It’s an interesting question, isn’t it? Unless you’re committed to the Eeyore perspective, the gloomy worldview of the donkey in A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh Gucci shoes books, we’ve all probably asked it of ourselves at least once.

I think wondering if you’re too optimistic is based on the unspoken assumption that expecting a positive outcome, or putting a positive spin on events, is a bad thing. As Havelock Ellis wrote, “The place where Gucci outlet optimism most flourishes is the lunatic asylum.”

In other words, being anything other than negative is crazy. The easy and cynical thing to write here is that world events would seem to support such a view. But I’m not sure that’s true.

All kinds of things seem to work when there’s no good reason for them to do so. Think of Gucci outlet online snowboarding stunts or the New York City transit system – how does it all keep going? When you get down to it, doesn’t it take a certain amount of optimism just to get out of bed in the morning? I live in Wisconsin and, at this time of year, I need a good reason to brave the elements each day. Without a belief in the future, how can you talk yourself into doing anything?

That’s why optimism is an important part of career development. You have to believe Asics Shoes that you’re right for the job in order to write a good cover letter, craft a good resume and deliver a good interview. Please note the action verbs which closed that previous sentence; write, craft, deliver. Although you might win the lottery, or have your dream job fall in your lap, as a general rule, it takes effort on your part to make good things happen.

And optimism is what inspires you to make that effort. Trying to develop your career without Gucci sunglasses a positive outlook is like trying to start a car in winter with a cold, dead battery – the sparks just aren’t going to fly. However, an optimistic attitude without follow-up action is as useless as a battery without a car. While thoughts of “I think I can,” inspired the Little Engine That Could, the key was how those thoughts kept the little wheels moving all the way up the mountain. You have to move the wheels. Optimism only gets in Gucci men boots your way when you use it as a substitute for work.

Surviving Breakups With a Positive, and Optimistic Attitude

A sudden separation or total breakup in your relationship is almost always a difficult, traumatic event for both parties, even if they both agree it is the best course. Surviving breakups is much easier if you have a happy, positive outlook on life. In fact, if you had such a mind-set to begin with, you might have avoided the split with your spouse or partner, in the first place. Some people just naturally expect the worst in any given Gucci shoes situation. We call these people pessimists, and they are not fun to be around. You can almost see the dark rain cloud, hovering above their heads. Funnily enough, their expectations are usually fulfilled, and things often turn out badly for them.

Most everyone goes through some tough times at various points in their life. When you hit a low point Gucci outlet, it is easy to fall into negative thoughts, and think that a bad outcome to most situations is normal. It is not.As improbable as it sounds, research is now telling us that having a positive outlook can make a big difference in your health, your job, your relationships and even how long you will live. Be honest now. If you were happier and more self-confident and assured, could you have avoided that split with your ex? Perhaps with a little more optimism, you would have stuck it out and tried harder to solve your problems, no?

Well, the good news is, it is not too late. You can regain control of your mental attitude and your life, as we will see in a minute. Then it will be much easier to figure out your relationships, and get back together with your ex. Surviving breakups is good; when it leads to you two reuniting, it is much better! Some people accuse the optimists of being unrealistic, or of having a simplistic view of life. This need not be true. Just be positive Gucci outlet online and pleasant as you go about your daily routine. You will gain many unexpected benefits, such as increased resistance to ordinary colds and sniffles, coping better with everyday difficulties and believe it or not, a longer life.

You should also know that optimism is infectious. Everyone likes to be around happy, positive folks. They are usually what we call popular. This is an important advantage in attracting and keeping a mate. In a lot of relationships, many problems, both large and small, tend to solve themselves if the couple is happy, confident and at ease with each other. So each and every day, tell yourself that these are the best days of your life, and you are darn well going to Asics Shoes make the most of them. Your life is not a Hollywood movie. You only get one single chance to go through each day. None can be relived, so give each and every day your best, happiest, most pleasant shot.

Now, just how do you shift gears and convert yourself from a pessimist into an optimist? Here are 4 steps you should take:

1. Caution: Do Not Magnify

When something bad or negative occurs, do not blow it up out of proportion. And do not forget the positive aspects of the situation. For example, you just cleaned and straightened up your house before going out Gucci sunglasses, but you forgot to turn out the lights. That is regrettable, but focus on what you accomplished, not on a small thing that you failed to do.

2. The Blame Game

Do not automatically blame yourself for bad things that happen to you or those around you. Was it really entirely your fault? Probably not.

3. Expect the Best

Instead of expecting the worst in every situation, expect the best. You, Gucci men boots and the people around you, will be happier and more cheerful. And as often as not, you will indeed get the best outcome.

4. No Negativity

Avoid negative thoughts. They are usually based on incorrect thinking. As soon as a negative thought pops into your head, replace it with a positive one. Instead of saying, "She does not love me anymore", say to yourself, "OK, our relationship is in trouble. I love her, and now I am going to fix it".

Practice these four habits until they become ingrained and automatic. They will help you in surviving breakups. Even better, they will help you renew your relationship with your ex. Meet with him/her, and try to work through your problems. Focus on the positive, and do not inflate small matters into a crisis. Start with the expectation that you will eventually succeed in repairing your relationship. And guess what? You will most likely do it.
